Kahoot! And Photomath are the only educational apps I know that are not meant for children.
So when I was exposed to the whole internet of educational apps while doing research for another article the other day, I was mindblown!
And it got me thinking about how tutors like you can utilise software and apps like them during your lessons! The more I thought about it, the more pros I saw.
The benefits are great, and you’ll be able to replace so many books with one device!
Many of these apps are free too. However, since tutoring is your career (or one of them), wouldn’t it be worth it to pay, even if the app charges for a subscription?
It’s like considering the carbon output of a car driven by one person and a public bus for hundreds of people.
So read on if you’re interested in learning how apps can make your lessons better!
Gamification
Firstly, we need to talk about gamification.
Basically, when you add elements of games to situations or environments that don’t usually have games, that’s gamification.
These elements could be issuing points, rewards, challenges, and goals that your student has to accomplish. And perhaps the most exciting, storytelling and levelling up!
But the most important would have to be the customisation aspect. A lot of games let you choose your own usernames, outfits, and “mission,” right?
And when you play those games, you’re more invested because it feels more personal to you.
So don’t have a “one size fits all” approach with all of your students. They’re individuals with different characters, interests, and attention spans.
And gamification is great because everybody loves games!
So by including gamification in your lessons, you can make learning anything much more fun, engaging, and exciting for students.
Think about how children and even adults learn so much from games. If a guy can name more than 15 countries, I’m 90% sure they learnt those countries from FIFA.
And that’s the goal, right? For your student to be engaged and learn well.
How Will Game Apps Make Your Classes More Enjoyable?
Firstly, how would they not? Everyone loves games! Even adults.
And children these days, especially, love using technology. So imagine how excited and engaged your tutee will be if they see you pulling an iPad from your bag!
It’ll probably be better if you have a projector because it takes the game from your device to a big screen. So the larger size could rile up the excitement for your tutee. How can they look away then?
Furthermore, think about all the books and worksheets that you won’t have to lug around anymore! And whose worksheet belongs to who, and what do you have to bring for Emily’s class tomorrow?
Well, good news. You wouldn’t have to do that if you digitalised your classes! So your life improves too. It will give you an ease of mind and take the literal load off your shoulders.
So if you’d like to know about some of the best apps you can use to help your tutee learn better, continue reading!
Mathletic
Math can be a challenging topic to teach engagingly and to get your students excited about.
But Mathletic has been touted as the best online platform for anyone to learn math! It was designed by actual educators, and it’s used in schools around the US.
And it’s incredibly engaging with their graphic designs and amazing storytelling, as the app aims to inspire the intrinsic desire to learn from the children themselves!
The best part? Each student’s journey with the platform is highly customisable to each child!
This app would be great if your student simply can’t get certain concepts in math or is still shaky. Learning with this app could give them a great introduction or help to solidify their foundation.
Kahoot
Ah, Kahoot!
The game we all know and loved back in school. So it doesn’t need any further introduction, right?
Use Kahoot! if you’d like to test your tutee’s knowledge on a certain topic, or if you’d like to make sure that you can close the book on a certain topic.
Trivia Crack
On the other hand, use Trivia Crack if you’d like to start your lessons with a more light-hearted approach.
The app or web version will hype your tutee up as their inner competitive side comes out to battle for the title of ‘Trivia Master’!
This can be a great way to start your lesson as it gets your tutee in a high mood, which should be the right mood for any type of learning!
However, some reviews have stated that the platform’s questions might be too hard for younger children. In that case, Trivia Quest might be better!
Quizlet
As the name suggests, you can use this tool to quiz your students by creating flashcards!
So create flashcards for them, with them, or use them in a round of rapid-fire quizzing to see how familiar they are with the topic!
As a bonus, it will also double up as revision material before their exams!
Conclusion
Now, you’ll have to strike a balance. You don’t want to be shortchanging your student’s parents by just playing games with your tutee, right?
Which parent can’t just put on a game on an iPad for their child?
So consider a hybrid model for your lessons. Don’t just immediately turn to games for every lesson!
Consider using games for just the last half or quarter of your lessons or every other lesson.
Games and online platforms can be a great help to many tutors, so using them wisely and selectively for good reasons will definitely engage your students and help them understand their concepts better!
Sounds like a great idea, right? But maybe you don’t have as many tutees as you’d like. Then join Singapore’s #1 tutoring agency, SmileTutor as a tutor!
