Things Tutors Should Know Before Joining SmileTutor

So, I heard you are looking to join us at SmileTutor as a tutor?

While the prospect of embarking on a long tutoring career may be extremely enticing, do not miss out on important details that will affect it!

That’s why we are here today to keep you informed of the details you need to take note of before joining us.

Resume

As with most jobs, having a good resume shows employers how skilled and experienced you are in the field.

For SmileTutor, we create your tutor profile based on your resume, and clients will then select you if your profile is lucrative enough.

Some things to include in your resume include past work experiences that are relevant to the subject you are teaching, education and awards.

If you realise that your resume is insufficient, fret not! You can improve it by taking up courses to beef up your relevant skills, or part-time jobs that utilise your expertise.

You can start by signing up for courses on SkillsFuture or applying for internships at LinkedIn. It is never too late!

Our Rates

Here at SmileTutor, we have recommended rate ranges for different categories of tutors based on the current market rates.

As of the time writing this article, the rates range from as low as $20 to as high as $130.

You may decide and select your rates based on both the table above and your own qualifications.

If you are fresh out of school and new to tutoring, you should consider setting your rates a little lower to increase your chances of getting more assignments.

I know it sounds difficult, but as your experience in tutoring increases, you can justifiably increase your rates as well.

This is because clients are more inclined to pay more for a more experienced tutor as compared to a new tutor.

Commission System

Our commission systems are split into 2 categories: Short- and long-term assignments.

For short-term assignments (<8 weeks), we generally collect 25% of the total tuition fees (or 25% of each lesson), so you would receive 75% of the total fees.

For long-term assignments (>8 weeks), tutors will not be paid for the first 2 weeks of lessons as our commission for long-term assignments is 50% of the first month.

The full fees of each lesson will be paid to you by the client after our 50% commission has been paid off.

You will typically only receive your commission after lessons have been conducted, and the commission rates are non-negotiable.

If you cancel an assignment before the first lesson is conducted, you will not receive any commission.

However, if the client cancels the assignment last minute with no notice, you will receive 50% of the unconducted lesson.

Available Timings and Dates

We love tutors who have plenty of open dates!

Having many open dates and timings available increases your chances of getting assignments, as some clients may have very specific and limited available timeframes.

This also allows you to have room in your schedule in case of any lesson postponements or sudden rearrangements.

While it is recommended for you to be free on as many days and timings as possible, do delegate a day or two to have a break once in a while.

Also, before applying for an assignment, do check your schedule to ensure that there are no clashes.

No one likes an unnecessary postponement!

Conclusion

With these tips in mind, the ball is in your court now. There might be unexpected setbacks during this journey, but the most important thing is to never give up.

All the best with your tutoring career!
