It doesn’t seem like there’s much of a link between studying, tutoring, and social media.
But there is! And why wouldn’t there be, with how prevalent social media is these days?
So today, I’m here to show you the power of social media for tutors and how to harness it!
I know. Anything social media-related might seem daunting. Where do you even start? What if you don’t want to show your face online? Will it even be worth it? Will anyone even see my content with the oversaturation online?
Well, let me quell those fears today! But first…
Why Should You Bother With Social Media?

You’re an academic, not an influencer!
Alright, you’re a tutor first and foremost. But think of yourself as a business or a brand, since you are offering professional services too.
And every business these days has at least some kind of social media presence, right? So think of your social media page as free marketing for your services.
Your social media presence will advertise you as a brand and put you out there as a tutor to tens or even hundreds of potential tutees and parents!
So how do you build your social media presence then?
Choose The Right Platform For You And Your Goals.
Alrighty! Which social media should you choose? Well, there isn’t a right or wrong answer to this. But I’d recommend using whichever platforms you can see yourself posting on for the long term!
You don’t want to see posting on a certain platform as a chore after 2 weeks. It’s social media, after all; have some fun with it! If you don’t use Facebook, then don’t post on Facebook. If you only want to post on 1 platform, then go ahead!
It would also be wise to consider your goals. This can help you decide where and what to post, so you can utilise the right social media platform!
If you only want to appeal to students, adapt trends on TikTok and post your self-made infographics on Instagram.
If you’re looking to appeal to parents, post about your awards, achievements, and what you specialise in on Facebook.
If you want to appeal to both parents and tuition centres, post actively on LinkedIn!
See, strategy!
What Should You Post?
This isn’t the time to be humble!
You want to show all of your chops off and everything you have to offer!
You’re holding your fort now. So you’ll have to look reliable as a professional. The easiest way to do that? Post about any awards you’ve received from your days as a student or during your professional career(s).
You could even post your personal awards, like the one you got 6 years ago for the badminton competition at the community club. This will make you look more relatable to some parents and students.
You can also talk about your teaching style and philosophy, why and how you got into tutoring, and what you specialise in! People will know how great of a tutor you are and whether you’re suitable for them or their child!
And even if you don’t get any tutees, you can still use your social media to show your credibility with what you post. For example, Post self-made infographics that are easy to digest and content that is relevant to what you specialise in!
And throw in a few memes to appeal to students and to show that you can relate to them too!
Remember to Interact With Your Audience
Even big international brands reply to the comments on their social media pages!
When you reply to comments, you show people how receptive you are; it’s like “customer service,” and the engagement will also encourage the platform’s algorithm to show your page to more people!
So reply to positive comments and delete the negative ones. You don’t need anyone bringing you down!
Build A Website
(Credits: Marketing Websites)
Go the old-school route and build a website if you’ve decided that social media isn’t for you.
Your website will act as a one-stop location for your brand advertising, communicating with potential clients, showing testimonials, and showcasing your professional portfolio!
There are many free websites like Wix where you can build a website for free, and they’re surprisingly not that hard to make. And that’s coming from tech-unsavvy and impatient me. All you need is some patience, a vision, and one or two afternoons.
And consider a blog where you can write about your personal messages, outlooks and philosophy to your areas of expertise too! This will help make you look more credible, and

Conclusion
As with anything on the internet, remember to stay safe!
See your page purely as something professional to advertise your business and services. Don’t get political or personal on there, or it might ruin your brand’s image.
And you never know what the viewer behind the screen might be thinking. It could be a stalker asking you to come over to tutor their “child.” So take safety precautions to verify people coming from your social media first!
But social media is truly a wondrous platform where dreams can come true. So it would be smart to put yourself out there to hundreds or even thousands of potential clients.
Just remember to stay consistent, relevant, and interesting with whatever you post!
